James packer divorce8/18/2023 ![]() Then their careers intertwined in 1999 when Packer asked Gyngell to join his father Kerry’s PBL media empire. He eventually set up a surf shop on the main strip Campbell Parade where he learned to how to hustle, how to sell.īonded by a love of glamorous women and competitive sport – rugby league in particular – they would hang at Packer’s Bondi pad with fellow crew members Chris “Cockie" Hancock and Matthew “Ched" Csedei. The more rebellious of the two pupils, Gyngell dropped out in year 11 and moved into a flat in Bondi with mates. It all started at elite Eastern Suburbs, Sydney school Cranbrook where the dyslexic Gyngell was once suspended for abusing an art teacher, who responded by calling him a “spoilt brat". Gyngell has increasingly frozen Packer out of his life. There’s no doubt Packer’s decision last September to divorce Erica, his wife of seven years and mother of his three children, played a big role in the build up to the argument that prompted the fight.īut their friendship had been eroding for at least two years as divergent careers, friends and lifestyles have prised the once inseparable twosome apart. How on earth did it come to this – and can they really patch it up? Gyngell’s father Bruce, the first man on Australian television, walked out on Frank Packer at Channel Nine (later to return) Gyngell himself walked out on Frank’s son Kerry, whom he considered a second father, and came back later too and now Gyngell has had a public street fight with Kerry’s son James. But it’s been a complex, sometimes volatile relationship. The families have shared considerable love and affection: the Gyngells playing trusted lieutenants to the richer, more powerful Packers. Their personal and business fortunes have been inextricably linked for more than half a century. They can afford the fine, of course, but the scandal has prompted questions about in particular about Packer’s international reputation as he builds his casino empire.Ī bigger question dangles over the deep fraternal bond between Gyngell, 48, Packer, 46, and their radically different families. They also shamed both men, who were on Friday slapped with criminal infringement notices for offensive behaviour and a potential $500 fine from the NSW Police. The pictures, at once shocking, brutal, funny and sad, were acquired, ironically enough, by Lachlan Murdoch ’s News Corporation, for more than $200,000 and published globally, setting off a social media storm. The brawling pair were too incensed to notice, or care about, the awe-struck paparazzo shooting over 300 photographs of the scrap – images that have marked their careers forever. It has seen him step outside the tightly-knit world of minders that provide advice, entertainment, policing and protection to Packer, to deliver what he sees as home truths. "There's been bigger and better deals, but this is the most special for me, I feel humbled," he said during a business stopover before he was due to jet into London to catch up with Erica and their children. This fight was driven in part by Gyngell’s desire to be his own man – a deep familial urge to emerge from the Packer shadow. Only two months ago, Mr Packer was on a high when he spoke to The Daily Telegraph from Tel Aviv after the NSW Government announced it would green-light the Barangaroo project. Mr Packer's company, Crown Ltd, faces an extremely busy decade ahead, with a new $1 billion Crown Philippines casino due to open in Manilla next year, followed by Macau's $2.4b Studio City in 2015 - and, possibly, a $380 million casino resort in Sri Lanka in 2017.Ĭrown's Burswood's $568m Crown Towers in Perth is also due to be completed in 2016, followed by the $1.4 billion Crown Sydney hotel in 2018 and the casino the following year. Mrs Baxter had spent her final days watching her grandchildren play on a beach in Fiji after Mr Packer flew the family to Pacific retreat when it became apparent her fragile condition was deteriorating. Yet between the joy of the children's births, Erica has faced family tragedy, with her mother Sheelah Baxter succumbing to a courageous 13-year battle with cancer in November 2011.
